Good joke. It looks like you are in a different planet.
Do you know what happened in Madras law college recently ? check the news.
Ofcourse you are going to say this is less
than north india as if you can quantify the
quality issue.
In my view Jaathi is every where in every walk of life.
It is very much protected and developed
by political parties.
You may say you don’t know your friends
Jaathi.
But that’s not the end of it.
But you know that they are NOT your Jaathi.
Think about it .
Also you know most of them who are your Jaathi as well.
So why you pretend that you are not
bothers about Jaathi?
You are saying you become aware of Jaathi
when you tried to get college admission.
Yes. Sir . You got the point.
Only when you suffer because of Jaathi you know.
There are scores of people who are insulted
althrough their life .
So they knew this all along.
For some one like you , Jaathi is not a issue because of less sufferings.
EVR has messed it up many aspects.
Instead of fighting Jaathi and other superstitions, he fought Brahmins,Hinduism etc.
In those days people are cheated in the name of God.
Now Tamilnadu has one more gang which cheats people in the name of “against god”,
“against Brahmins” etc
That is EVR’s creation.

Vijay,
Wait for the next post on law college incidents etc.
Of course it is less than North India. Tamil Nadu is much more progressive. Even if you haven’t lived in North India, just see how many casteist incidents get reported in North India.
I know about the caste of half my friends. I don’t know about the other half. It hasn’t made a difference to us. You would be a poor judge of whether it has made a difference or not.
It is impossible for a middle class Indian to be unaware of jaathi. We are not there yet. Hopefully, it will intrude less and less in one’s life. Of course, there are many who suffer because of caste. The hope is that it will matter less for them too. I believe that Periyar has made a contribution towards that. Of course he has messed up. Any movement whose main point is hate is bound to have its weaknesses. That is why Periyar’s (limited) success is surprising.

Vinavu,
As I mentioned in the post, I have read several DK publications. As I also mentioned, I don’t beleive that Periyar was a great thinker. I think his main contribution was to create a committed cadre which acted as a catalyst. I appreciate his honesty, transparency and courage. His influence has lessened the casteism in TN. However, I think that if he had really worked on eradication of caste instead of anti-brahmin campaigns, the results in TN would be even better. His thinking process was flawed, but his achievements cannot be belittled.

>>It is impossible for a middle class >>Indian to be unaware of jaathi
You used the word “praq-gnai” which in my limited sankskrit knowledge means “awareness” .
So if you are aware of Jaathi, you have
Praq-gnai about it.
Also I was thinking about “jaathi veri”.
In my view “Jaathi veri” cannot be equated
to “Jaathi veri expression”.
A person may physically hurt some one because of Jaathi veri .
But hurting some one mentally is also equally bad.
Here is another example of Jaathi veri expression which is quite different from
above two.
Many of Brahmins love Kamala Hasan just because he is a brhamin.
I am yet to see an Iyengar, who is not a
Kamal veriyan in all my years of experience.
Take Dasavatharam.
Majority of my non-brhamin friends said,
Dasavatharam is total crap with very few exceptions.
On the other hand most of my brhamin friends
feedback is positive impression.
tehy could not just see/say anything negative about the movie apart from the
fact they make it a must see ritual.
I am very very carful in my above observation.
Ofcourse I have seen negligible exceptions
too.
Such an expression of “Jaathi veri” is despicable too.
After all these years of education, experience, money etc many brhamins don’t treat me the same way they treat other brahmins.
South is generally more gentle than north.
There may be zillions of historical reasons
for it.
Please do not give credit to EVR for that.
I am pretty sure he has not even read Hinduism. An idiot.
He said, Tamil is “Kaatu mirandi” Bashai.
A joker. Actually only higher civilisation
can even think and creat a language.
He wrote to British to stay back in India especially south india. Madayan.
Claims he is an Atheist.
Does not even know that “there is no god”
is also belief and so he is a believer.
Mad man.
Hit Pillayar with slippers in public(or something like that)
Does not know if God is there, he is also
in slippers and he is also in him and not
just in Pillayar statue. Stupid.
His stupidity was good enough for some stupid Brhamins. Thats all about it.
திசெம்பர் 24, 2008 at 6:21 முப
Vijay,
I didn’t say that I am unaware of caste – I said “enakku avvalavaaga pragnai irunthathillai” – very different from “enakku pragnaiye irunthathillai”. I think you must have misread my words.
I can’t comment on almost all Iyengars being fans of Kamal. Never really noticed it one way or other. However, if they do, I wouldn’t call it jaathi veri – I would characterize that as suya jathi abhimanam, if anything.
I am sorry to hear that you have noticed a difference in the way many brahmins treat you and other brahmins. Again, I never really ran across this. I lived in a hostel with nearly 800 students for 4 years and another hostel with 200 students for 1.5 years. Saw examples of “suya jathi abhimanam” – didn’t see anybody rejecting others because of their caste. Maybe I lucked out.
I don’t think Periyar was flawless. I think his experiences made him resent brahmins. He was a maverick, driven by resentment. He was no scholar or thinker. But I think he was honest about himself, he had no illusions, and he didn’t try to create a false image of him for his followers. Perhaps it is a secondary effect, but I think he had a role in lessening the casteism in TN. I don’t see any explanation other than him and the Dravidian movement for the comparatively lesser casteist feeling in TN. If it is true of Karnataka and Kerala as well, then perhaps I would look for a different reason.
I don’t think Pillaiyar would be angry with him for the slipper incident. But it was a crass gesture, no doubt.

Murali,
I haven’t really read Ambedkar’s works. With my limited knowledge, I do think that he was a scholar and noteworthy thinker. Periyar was no scholar. He was a maverick, driven by anti-brahmin feeling. There is some justice in saying that he was the catalyst for moving castesim to a different place. But his flaws don’t make his achievements any less – it is in fact surprising that he achieved so much given his thought process.

>>suya jathi abhimanam
Interesting phrase for Jathi veri which is harmless 🙂
>>I lived in a hostel with nearly 800 >>students for 4 years and another hostel >>with 200 students for 1.5 years. Saw >>examples of “suya jathi abhimanam” –
HEre is my college experience.
I and 2 of my brhamin friends are supposed
to meet at one of their house.
The time arraned was 9.am.
I reached their accidentally 10 minutes earlier. I was surprised to see the sight of
my second(visitor) brhamin friend eating there.
1. I was not offered though I would have rejected because I already had breakfast.
2. I did know any such plan between them
3. Because meeting was 9.am on would have expected him to take breakfast before he comes too, like me
4. Painful thing is there is no discussion
or any kind of “saljappu” too
I consider myself lucky for two reasons
1. I am not that silly like them
2. I had the maturity to ignore it and move on with them.
Some how I am reminded of this incident now.
Can you call such incidents as “suya jathi abimanam” as well ?
In life , ever one other than Brhamins experience such incidents frequently.
They do hurt people.
It hurt more if you look at things in broader perspective.
Many of my brhamin friends, Drink, smoke, eat meat etc.
Lie,spin without anyhesitation.
Their bhakthi is in general not genuine. They lack knowledge in spritual matters.
Even on intelligence levels/ ability to
analyse etc many are average/below average.
Actually they are no different from many.
But yet they consider themselves superior.
Let them brag if they want to.
But trying hurt ?
It is nothing but “Jathi veri”.
I used to get first rank when I was in school.
One of my school friend asked another friend
“Is he a brhamin ?”
Other friend replied “Ofcourse. How else can he get first rank?”
See, even in such age they were spood fed most likely by their parents about “Brhamin
supremacy”
Another recent example:
Many of my Brhamin friends joined together
and started learning “rudhram”.
Funny thing is I came to know after few week only.
1. Why did not they ask me/tell me
even after knowing I may be interested.
2. Incidentally my Brother was refused
to be taught “Rudhram” because,he
was not a Brhamin.
2. After all it is something to do God.
How can it be monopoly of “Brhamins”
if that was the reason.
3. Where is the question of selfishness
(That I only should know Rudhram)
in learning something related to GOD
Extraordinarily silly. But thats what
they are.
Do I care ? Absolutely waste of my time.
By one thing. These incidents cannot be
brushed aside as “suya Jathi abibanam”
They are are Jathi veri expressed in
less harmful way which won’t get media
attention.
It will be stupid for me to generalise all
Brhamins. But my experience is not at all
healthy.
திசெம்பர் 25, 2008 at 1:09 முப
VIjay,
I am sorry to hear about your experiences haven’t been healthy. Too bad. I don’t beleive that the caste is a major factor in academic performance at all – it is the economic level and education level of the parents and of course, peer pressure which matter.
திசெம்பர் 25, 2008 at 6:53 முப
//
I don’t beleive that the caste is a major factor in academic performance at all – it is the economic level and education level of the parents and of course, peer pressure which matter.//
Correct.
Though genetics play crucial role, there is
no proof that non-brhamin cannot do well
as traditionally they did not have opportunity. But that does not mean they can’t do well when they get an opportunity.
If Brhamins really think that only they can do well, why then they deny/deny others a chance. Why closed door operation ?
That shows their lack of confidence.
That shows they know what they think “brhamin supremacy” cannot be right
Carnatic music is one such area where
others are either prevented, discouraged or usually not acknowledged or insulted.
Very very unhealthy area if you are a non-brhamin.
In many cases they still seem to follow
some modified form of gurugul and being
a non-brhamin it is very difficut in such a system.
A Brhamin may eat in non-brhamin’s house because that is his choice.
But can a non-brhamin eat in brhamin’s house ? Only if he is offered.
My problem is this.
I accepted/ignored all my negative experience. Fine.
Probably I take it as God’s way of making
me tough.
But what about my children.
Should I tolerate them being sidelined just because they are my children ?
Can’t they learn what ever they like to and
encourged, appreciated ,offered more opportunities if they do well ?
In most cases they can but not in areas like
carnatic music .
Shall I say one of very few last strangle hold?
It is a very corrupted world in my experience.
Only very few exceptionally talented non-brhamins may get acknowledged.
Otherwise it is fully controlled by brhamins.
If I knew when I was young I would have strived myself to master it and spread
the knowledge for free.
You should see December music festival to
get a first hand impression of what I say.
திசெம்பர் 26, 2008 at 4:18 முப
I haven’t been to December music festival in ages. In U.S., I see all castes learning Carnatic music – the only factor is the interest level of parents. Even in TN, Carnatic music hasn’t been the bastion of brahmins – from Thiruvavaduthurai Rajaratnam Pillai onwards, there have been several doyens of Carnatic music who were non-brahmins. I don’t know about today – it is difficult to beleive that non-brahmins are discouraged, but you are probably closer to the ground. I think many more brahmins are exposed to Carnatic music from a young age – might explain their higher interest in Carnatic music. My family very rarely listened to Carnatic music when we were growing up – but we would hear songs during Navarathri etc. Several of my non-brahmin friends had never heard a Carnatic music song in their life until their twenties. Harder for them to feel that their children should learn Carnatic music.
திசெம்பர் 26, 2008 at 11:39 முப
I always liked to understand theory behind anything.
Unfortunately not many text books on
carnatic music theory exists.
Even the few available are very cryptic.
Most carnatic music guys are pretty hands on. They start training there vocal cords
/instruments from day one.
Because of that their theoretical understanding is generally less and further their ability to explain logically is even less.
I had a chance to discuss these sort of issues with Umayalpuram Sivaraman(Mridangam), Bombay Jayashree(vocal),
Unnikrishnan(vocal) etc.
Lack of/limited theoretical explanation forces you to practise more which inturn forces you to be with guru to learn and to verify what you learnt.
Yes, there are some non-brhamin stalwarts.
But they are excelptionally talented and
they are from older generation too.
Tell me how many such non-brhamin stalwarts are there now ?
Take top 10,20 or even fifty. What percentage ?
In my direct experience (ofcourse by trying to expose this for my children) I feel
it is very very hard today(I mean there
are so many hurdles to reach the top)
Another important problem because of this(one community control/dominance) is
Carnatic music has become totally boring,
uninteresting stuff.
Only those who can understand can appreciate.
Only who learn can understand.
Which makes it a closed loop.
Very little attempts are made to make it interesting.
I have no idea why certain people are
kept at extreme heights(like Maharajapuram
Santhanam ..etc)
Most of these top guys do Vocal gymnastics.
There greatness seems to be measured based
on how many octaves they can go back and forth.
But what about our enjoyment ?
To further kill us they jump in to Telugu Keerthana which they can’t understand and we can’t understand.
Complete stupidity. Total rigidy.
No innovation.
Same maavu ,different grinder.
I sincerely feel such a wonderful art with sevaral unique features should move out
of one community domination for it to
have better future.
Otherwise just like Hinduism(which was once controlled by Brhamins and so now messed up
with many of them don’t even know what it is) Carnatic music will become esoteric(it is already almost there).
திசெம்பர் 26, 2008 at 6:51 பிப
I agree with most of your opinions on Carnatic music – though my impression is that there is no brahmin domination among artists. However, there is a feedback effect here – more brahmins are exposed to Carnatic music, they want their children to learn, the next generation would have even more brahmin Carnatic artists and so on. The upper middle class non-brahmins need to be interested in Carnatic music for this to stop.

The upper middle class non-brahmins need to be interested in Carnatic music for this to stop.
//
You are implying as if they are not interested.
There is no reason for that.
Agreed that most brhamin families make
their children learn.
Only few such kids are genuinely keen
and others learn because of their parents.
Music is of general interest to almost everyone.
For a south indian, carnatic music is
unavoidable.
Apart from many things music is entertainment too.
If you want to learn basics of
music like Ragha etc you cannot avoid
learning carnatic.
Non-brhamins are learning. But thats all about it. You will not hear about them
later.
All the sabhas are controlled by brhamins.
All review writers in media are brhamins.
all music gurus are brhamins.
There may be one or two exceptions.
But they are exceptions.
You must have heard famous quote like
“Madurai somu paadaRAAN , Madurai mani PadaRAAR”
I also thought some stupid somewhere said it.
But just a few weeks ago, I happened to attend lecture of a vidwan.
To my surprise he said some thing similar too.
While addressing music trinities(thygayyar,
Dhikshidar,..) even while addressing dikshidars brother lot of respect and reverence shown.
But while addressing a non-brhamin vidhwan,
and a foreigner , use of terms like “guy”
etc.
I wonder whether they made a habit of this with out even realising that it is bad.
திசெம்பர் 27, 2008 at 8:07 பிப
There is no implying, Vijay – I say explicitly that several of my non-brahmin friends haven’t heard Carnatic music songs until in their twenties.
The more you hear a music, the more you are interested in it. For the predominant majority of Tamilians, film music is the only music (including me) and it takes a conscious effort to listen to other genres. I wasn’t interested in Hindi film music until I went to North India; I started listening to Western Classical music only in my twenties. I still don’t listen to rock, rap, Hindustani classical etc. They are not interesting to me. I am definitely not interested in making my children learn Hindustani classical. That is the way of things.
I think you are generalizing from isolated incidents. I have heard both “Madurai Somu padaran/padarar” and “Madurai Mani padaran/padarar” – usually a function of the age of the person saying it.
திசெம்பர் 28, 2008 at 4:49 முப
//
I have heard both “Madurai Somu padaran/padarar” and “Madurai Mani padaran/padarar” – usually a function of the age of the person saying it.
//
I have heard only one version of it and
it was to emphasize disrespect for
Madurai Somu.
Anyway age difference between Madurai somu
and Madurai Mani iyer is not big to
call one as RaaN and other one as Raar.
Unfortunate thing is we cannot verify
such things now as not many non-brhamin
salwarts are there now.
//
The more you hear a music, the more you are interested in it. For the predominant majority of Tamilians, film music is the only music (including me)
//
Correct. Thats how we get interested in it.
But then some of us like to learn it.
When we learn it we cannot avoid
carnatic(in south) to learn basics
of Ragha.
I know few singers who start singing
up to a certain point and realise there
fundamentals are not strong enough
to move up / try certain songs.
It is almost impossible to get
“Gamakam” with out much practice.
Some how or other they are forced into
Carnatic.
If you simply want to be a listener ,
then you don’t have to worry about
carnatic at all.
But you can’t avoid it if you want to
learn music in south.
Most of cine music people are non- brhamins
these days.
Obviously it shows their interest in music
and because of fundamental requirements
they could not have avoided Carnatic.
why then not many non-brhamins in carnatic
music career ?
Brhamins are only 3% of population.
Even if a fraction of non-brhamins learn music obviously atleast equal of some significant percentage of top artists
must be non-brhamins .
There must be some logical reason.
It cannot be just the reason that
non-brhamins don’t listen carnatic.
We are not talking about just listeners.
we are talking about those who are learning
music in some form or other(instrumental/vocal).

Vijay, Sometimes you misread what I write. I wrote “padaran/padarar” is a function of the age of the person saying it – meaning older people tend to say padaran, and younger ones padarar. How do the relative ages of Somu & Mani Iyer matter to this statement?
I agree that in a percentage sense, many more brahmins are interested in Carnatic music than otherwise. I don’t think that this is due to caste discrimination – I think you are generalizing from specific incidents – though, being away from TN for several years, and never having learnt Carnatic music myself, I am not 100% sure. Can we move on?
திசெம்பர் 28, 2008 at 5:11 முப
Vijay –
I don’t understand your actual intentions behind the comments you are making in this blog post. If you want to comment about the social injustices like brahmin controlled music sabhas(!!), you not able to learn carnatic music, and letting us know that you are a first rank holder (even though you are not a brahmin, looks like not a single time in my class a brahmin was a first rank holder too, so nothing new there), this is probably not the right post.
However there is a very relevant issue that is being discussed here about the the brahmin bashing in tamil blogging world – like name calling and even making people feel ashamed of their religious beliefs under the disguise of parpaneeyam!!
The most disgusting part is the politics they play and the moral high ground they want to take.
Do you think what is going on tamil blogging world is right? Can you answer just that question? After that you can continue your rant, I guess.
Please think before you post, if exceptions are your rules then there is no point in discussing…

Why is it so hard to let the responsibilities rest with the persons who you deal with and not their caste?
திசெம்பர் 28, 2008 at 7:45 முப

Prasanna,murali, RV,
I am not trying to generalise isolated incidents.
For your info, I was born and brought up
fully surrounded by brhamins.
For some strange reason (may be because
of my upbringing) many without even asking
me, assume I am a Brhamin.
There was no time in the past I stayed away
from Brhamin. I feel at ease with them
in general as long as they don’t touch
the issue of “Brhaminism”
I will never do a mistake of Brhamin bashing.
I always criticized meaningless casteism in
all forms. For many years I refused to Identify myself with any caste.
Despite all these, I do see problems in
Carnatic music area, for non-brhamins.
You don’t have to accept what I say.
As I said before, See percentage
statistics on Brhamin/non bhramin stalwarts
in carnatic music,cine music etc.
Please also be aware that south indian cinemusic has its base in carnatic.
Do not treat them completely differently
like Hindustani and carnatic or
Western and Carnatic.
Analyse youself.
It is very easy to brush genuine issues aside by saying “people are generalising specic issue”
Instead we should attempt objective analysis.
திசெம்பர் 28, 2008 at 11:31 முப
Hello all,
I agree with vijay’s view and there seem
to be contradiction in some of your views.
Instead of generalising what he says,
why can’t you tell the reason for
Brhamin domination in Carnatic music area?
Please do not say that one should listen to
more carnatic music for that.
It is so boring that no can do it.
As Vijay says there are only 2 ways.
1. Learn when you are very very young
2. Learn it as you develop general interest in music learning, for fundamental reasons.
While most Brhamins do 1 , non-brhamins do 2.
Why then so much of brhamins in carnatic music ?
There must be a better sensible reason for
it.
Vijay, I appreciate your writings.
திசெம்பர் 28, 2008 at 4:20 பிப
Vijay,
Based on several of your posts, I don’t believe you harbor any anti-brahmin sentiments in general. However, I think that you feel that Carnatic music is dominated by brahmins and they discriminate against non-brahmins. As I said, I find it hard to believe; I think it is due to many more brahmins being exposed to Carnatic music from a young age, which makes them feel that their children should learn it, which exposes their children, and so on. From my own experience, I don’t think this happens in upper middle class, middle class, non-brahmin communities that often.
Jagan,
I would be glad to know of contradictions, if any, in my statements. Please just don’t say there are contradictions, point out what they are!
I have many times explained why I think many more brahmins are interested in Carnatic music. If you feel nobody can even listen to it, why would these people want to learn it? Why would they want their children to learn it?
திசெம்பர் 28, 2008 at 9:10 பிப
Jagan –
By any chance your other name is Vijay! Both of them have committed the same spelling mistake. Checking their IP would reveal the true faces.
Also is it possible to explain why in karakaattam, oyilaattam, thappaattam, thamil makkal isai only non-brahmins are more dominant? I’m not accusing here it is based on statistics and you can observe this…
Now after Jagan’s reply I don’t believe one word about Vijay’s “Personal experience”!

Vijay/Jagan,

Dear RV,
Your posts are balanced and good to read.
Periyar’s greatest acheivement is in abolishing caste surnames in TN. Only Tamils have renounced their caste surnames for the past few decades while rest of India is still sporting names like Nairs, Menons, Reddys, Sharmas, Yadavs, etc.
Pls try his book :
“Pen En Adimaiyaanal ? ” to realise his depth and vision.
திசெம்பர் 29, 2008 at 6:55 பிப
Athiyaman,
Thanks for your feedback, and praise, and book reco.
I beg to differ with your estimate of Periyar’s greatest acheivement, though. IMO, Abolishing caste surnames is just cosmetic. I think his greatest achievement was creating a committed cadre which was influential in reducing the casteism in TN.

“Please do not say that one should listen to

It is so boring that no can do it” என்று கூறிய பிறகு நீங்கள் அதை கற்றால் தேவலையா, கற்காவிட்டால் தேவலையா?

ஜனவரி 24, 2009 at 9:08 முப

// குற்றங்கள் இல்லாத மனிதர்கள் இருக்கமுடியாது. // நானும் இதையேதான் சொல்கிறேன். நீங்களும் ஒத்துக் கொள்கிறீர்கள். அப்படி இருக்கும்போது அவர் குறையே இல்லாத ஒரு மாமனிதர் என்று சித்தரிப்பது சரிதானா? அவரது நிறைகுறைகளை சீர்தூக்கி பார்க்கும் ஒரு முயற்சியை யாருமே செய்ய வராதது அவரை போன்ற ஆளுமைக்கு ஒரு குறை என்று நீங்கள் நினைக்கவில்லையா?
// தாசி வீட்டுக்குப்போனது எல்லாம் குறையில்லையா?// 1882இல் பிறந்த பணக்கார குடும்பத்தை சேர்ந்த ஒருவர் தாசி வீட்டுக்கு போனது எல்லாம் ஒரு குறை இல்லை. இது ஒன்றுதான் உங்களுக்கு குறையாக தெரிகிறதா? உங்களுக்கு அவரது சிந்தனைகளில் எந்த குறையும் தெரியவில்லையா?
// குறைகளை மறந்து நிறைகளை நினைத்து பெரியாரை தலைவராக ஏற்போம். // இது என்னை பொறுத்த வரை சரியான அணுகுமுறை இல்லை. ஆரம்பப் பள்ளி மாணவர்களுக்கு வேண்டுமானால் நிறைகளை மட்டும் சொல்லலாம். அது அவர்களுக்கு போதும். ஆனால் உண்மையை சீர்தூக்கி பார்ப்பதுதான் சரியான அணுகுமுறை.
