Anand keeps the crown, he is the new world champion!

Game 11 was very interesting. I think Anand could have tried for a win. However, he is smarter than I will ever be, simplified, got the draw, and he continues to be the world champion!

Bad day for Anand. His first loss, and a complete rout. He never had a chance.

It is games like this that are really hard for a patzer like me. For example, I can’t understand why Anand didn’t play Nc4 at move 22. He would have exchanged the minor pieces off, perhaps even the queens off, and would have had the same pawn structure as white. Is there a tempo calculation here that favors Kramnik? Or why didn’t he try Bf3 and try to exchange the light squared bishop off?

After 26 a4, even I could say that Anand is going to lose at least a pawn.

It is not the end of the world, but I hope the momentum hasn’t shifted. Kramnik was better in the last 3 games. Kudos to Kramnik!

It is almost over. Anand needs one draw in 3 games to become the next world champion. Even if he loses all three, the match just goes to rapid game tiebreaker.

But Anand was lucky today! He was at a serious disadvantage for most of the game. Surprisingly for him, he was also in time trouble. He had to make nearly 20 moves in the last 30 minutes.

Kudos to Kramnik for fighting, even though the match situation appears hopeless.

Anand Kramnik Game 8

Anand is one step closer to being the world champion. Now Kramnik needs to win 3 games out of 4, and he is going to play 2 of those games as black. He has a notorious record as black – he has won something like 1 game out of the last 50 games as black. It is not like he cannot play black, but his focus as black has been to equalize and get a draw quickly. He needs to break a habit of lifetime and win at least one game as black.

I thought Anand was at disadvantage today. I couldn’t figure out his move Rd3 at all. It seemed premature. Also his knight was more or less out of the game.

But he did fight psychologically. Again, he was the first one to depart from the books and get a new move in. He again didn’t castle, and tried to keep open lines against the white king. Kramnik played well, but he couldn’t capitalize on his tiny advantage and break through.

Anand is almost there!

Anand vs Kramnik Game 7

Game looked interesting for the most part. Kramnik very carefully and accurately neutralized. Comments here

This is a game for chess afficianados. No fireworks, no breathtaking sacrifices, queens off the board early in the game. Interesting game because Kramnik deliberately unbalanced the position, but got the worst of it. He was hoping to get a good knight against a bad bishop, but Anand cramped his knight for moves. The balance was in Anand’s favor. However, it was not a winning advantage. Kramnik steadily neutralized, and built a pawn fortress. Neither king can break through to opponent’s territory.

Anand is closer to winning the title. Kramnik needs to win 3 out 5 remaining games to push this into tiebreaker, and 4 out of 5 to win the title outright. That is a miracle at this level. The last time a grandmaster was dominated that way was when Fischer beat Taimanov 6-0 in a 6 game match, and followed it up with a 6-0 result against Larsen as well. Kramnik is no Fischer…

Another win for Anand – He is almost the world champion! It is near impossible for Kramnik to come back.

When Anand got two connected pawns in the middle, one of which was passed, he gained a huge advantage. I still can’t understand why Kramnik gave the second pawn away. After that, at that level, the game is really over.

Anand is almost there – he won again, now leads by 2 points, and Kramnik needs to win at least 2 games out of the next 7 to take it to the tiebreaker. That is going to be difficult.

Today’s games followed game 3 to a large extent. I couldn’t follow it, managed to sneak at it only after the game was over. Very nice game. Susan Polgar – a great player herself – wrote in her post that Nxd4 on move 29 would be the worst move that Kramnik can make, and Kramnik went ahead and made that exact move. Susan knew he had lost right then – poor patzers like me needed to wait until the denouement unfolded. Ne3 on move 34 was awesome!

I gotta admit that if I were Kramnik, I would have continued to play by giving away my rook (Rc7) and trying a swindle with my two connected passed pawns. Clearly Kramnik knew that is not going to work against a player like Anand.

Dull draw. Anand played it safe, and Kramnik equalized without much effort. In fact, Kramnik was the one who was taking some risks.

When the game ended, Anand had an extra pawn and a bishop pair. Kramnik had a very good knight. Kramnik had more mobility, Anand was a little cramped. The only way for Anand to keep his extra pawn was to cramp his pieces further – pawn push to c5 would have saved the pawn, but would have blocked his bishop at b4.

However, I thought that Anand can solve his problems – I felt he should have gone for it. However, he apparently had only 3 minutes to make 8 more moves and in such time trouble, it is hard to calculate all nuances of this position. Kramnik offered the draw, and perhaps taking the draw was the prudent option.

I just wish Anand trusts his powers more and is less prudent. Anand is very risk averse for a long time now. I get a feeling that he just looks for a draw as black and tries to win only with white. A Topalov or a Shirov 5 years back are much more exciting!
